Abstract
The paper reviews a novelty of domestic Caucasian studies, a collective monograph by Sh. A. Magaramov, N. D. Chekulaev and E. I. Inozemtseva, dedicated to the Russian garrison of the city of Derbent. The circumstances of his appearance in the Caspian Sea, the features of the service of soldiers and officers of the Grassroots Corps are analyzed. The reasons for the Eastern (Caspian) campaign of Peter I are revealed. At the same time, the authors reconstruct the specifics of the age under study, show its military-political, economic and cultural features. The chapters-sections devoted to separate aspects of this problem are characterized. In a number of cases, there is a controversy with the authors of the study on various interpretations of the events described. The advantages and disadvantages of collective work are shown. The source solidity of the book is noted, which is based on data found in the Central State Archive of the Republic of Dagestan and introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The prospects for the demand for the study among readers are assessed.
