GEORGE ARSENIEVICH EMANUEL AND THE PEOPLES OF THE CENTRAL CAUCASUS (1826-1831)

Abstract
The article deals with the activities of the commander-in-chief of the Caucasian line, general G.A. Emanuel in the Central Caucasus in 1826-1831. His role in organizing the first military-scientific expedition to Elbrus in 1829 is shown based on archival sources. It’s become one of the forms of a military-intelligence study of the region during the Caucasian War. The characteristic of the interaction of Emanuel with the mountain peoples of the Central Caucasus is given and some aspects of administrative practice in this region are highlighted. His contribution to resolving the ethno-political situation in the Central Caucasus and the desire to use “measures of peaceful relations with the highlanders” along with military pressure are analyzed. It is shown that with the name of G.A. Emanuel in the post of commander of troops on the Caucasian line linked very significant events in the history of the peoples of the Central Caucasus: the oath of allegiance to the Russian throne and the first steps in their political and administrative integration into the Russian state.
